It isn't just that there was a free tier, it was, when you have to pay, there was a limit and you could understand, I am paying $15 for instance, $7 for database, $5 for redis (I don't remember prices), sum is $27/mo, so you know roughly how much it would cost you. While there's no activity, your app "sleeps", and only wakes up when a user makes a request.
