Yes romex can be use as a replacement and I recommend it if you have access, It must be sized according to the size of the breaker 15a=#14 20a=#12. WebJust an off the cuff guess, if you have BX wire, you probably need to use a metal box. Not an electrician, but I helped one out for a summer.
